About The Artwork

This colorful 9" x 12" still life oil painting is about delight and focuses on the spirit of creativity as a component of delight. The kitchen, which is the area where this painting takes place, is a location that can be symbolic of gathering, celebration and of course delight! It's a creative area in a home and one of nurturing. To create the painting, I pulled pieces from my collection of vintage kitchen wares and added beautiful pieces of fruit. My process of interpretation always aims toward cultivating the simple silhouettes I see in a way that touches on a sense of wonder. Color is a part of that expression and certainly an extension of the delight I experience in translating an experience to the canvas.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
