About The Artwork

After three weeks of drainage issues in my studio where human feces burst into my precious creative space with force, this was an obvious place to start my new creative movement with a bowel movement! I had to laugh about it and embrace the poo! I've been having a blast using these emojis in fresh and interesting ways on my instagram and feeling much more light about it. Here's what a critic friend of mine who saw this in the studio had to say, "Karson’s new work offers a probing take on the blended nature of contemporary culture. By placing the familiar poo emoji against a blue and yellow backdrop echoing the Ukrainian flag, it captures the liminal space of the social media feed, where instant emojified pop culture intermingles with horrific scenes of war, climate emergency and an impending apocalypse. In foregrounding the emoji, Karson offers a searing indictment of how most of us prioritise the flippant over the important."

Douglas Karson is an American-born artist living and working in Bristol. Self-taught, his practice incorporates storytelling, poetry and ink on paper with a particular focus on painting. Bold colour, geometry and a sensitivity to line and balance characterise his paintings, which are informed by personal and spiritual philosophies. His ongoing series, THE RULES, uses elements from Greco-Roman philosophy, Chinese mythology, Yogic theory and Hindi philosophy to formulate a process of painting-as-manifesto, or manifesto-as-painting. A rigid formal framework and methodology engenders infinite potential outcomes, each a cross-cultural message suffused with subtle politics. Douglas believes passionately in creating and nurturing artist communities. He founded Art Battle UK, a live painting event that brings artists and art lovers together in a unique environment. Douglas has participated in and organised over 30 group and solo exhibitions internationally in the UK and the United States, and his work has been featured in magazines such as Art Reveal and Creativ Paper.
