About The Artwork
Europeans imported apples when they came to the new world, and a mutant member of a fly species that lays eggs on hawthorns decided that the apples smelled better. This led to a case of sympatric speciation that is used as a textbook illustration of one of the ways evolution works. Apples are also a potent biblical symbol in our culture, even though the fruit of the tree of knowledge was not an apple in the earliest known version. Perhaps our literary culture has evolved to prefer apples, too.

She incorporates found and recycled items such as plastic bags, foil, discarded maps, and rejected print proofs into her work. Through the process of finding and selecting her materials, she brings the direct experience of exploring a landscape into the final image. Hanna Coy is an artist and hydrologist who lives in Tucson, Arizona. She has studied ecology and evolutionary biology, watershed management, and studio art at the University of Arizona.
