The painting was inspired after a visit to Chepstow Castle. It struck me forcibly whilst taking in the deep silence of the ruins, just how many thousands of people must have walked around it over the centuries, let alone the thousands who lived and worked in it when it was in use. Most of those thousands of people now of course dead. It struck me that I was representing one of the fleeting minority — compared with those past numbers — who were temporarily alive. The bright colours of the background signify the phases of the human lifespan. Starting from the left, the green colour represents childhood, and the young teenage years, when we think we are confident in our beliefs..I chose green with reference to Shakespeare’s, Anthony and Cleopatra, when Cleopatra talks of her youth, “My salad days, when I was green in judgement:” Drifting into the yellow period we reach our prime, the bright yellow representing the strong energy of young middle age, when we have learned a little, and forge ahead in our relationships, have children, and pursue dreams. The yellow colour drifts into the cooler, lilac grey, as our lives and values change, and ends up in the bluer hues of later life. Finally, we can identify with the ghost, who is totally absorbed in what she sees from her window. The Butterfly is a simple metaphor, representing the past, the present, and hopefully, the future. The painting is done in Acrylic paint. I used acrylic in order to more easily get the translucence of the ghost. The canvas is on a flimsy but strong wooden stretcher, and would hang on a wall without being in a surround frame. Of course it could be put in one if that was the preference.
