There is great deception in abstraction. As well as deception in rough surfaces and scratchy textures. They are not the hostile places they first seem to be. I’m not sure where I am here. By the sea or by a lake. A presumed horizon; sky that is clear; sky that is cloudy; dark silhouette of a mysterious object And is that a house on the left, with a tree standing next to it? No literal sea, but a sea of snow. There is no need to escape to a warm place when the colours are warming you. There is no need to see people when character is already inside the textures. There is no need to name the objects you see when the subject is clear. In these rough places there is great tenderness. The artist’s challenge: how to achieve freshness, lightness, insubstantiality of snow. How to let the light in without denying the dark and the rough.

I was born and raised in Russia and am now living and working in London and Paris. My education was primarily in philosophy and law and I worked for seven years as a lecturer in philosophy and as a lawyer in the banking sector. I recently discovered that I have a facility for painting and this has greatly widened my artistic interests. I previously worked at length in a collaboration to bring architectural designs to life and this work has proved valuable in stimulating an experimental approach to my current painting. I am also exploring the links between the visual experience of viewing a painting and aural voices behind it which connect the viewer’s reaction with the artist’s story. I have published a book of my own collected aphorisms and am currently working on a novel.
