About The Artwork

These images form part of a recent series of spatial light works based on the artist’s research into colour theory and light fields. My current focus is on the fluid motion of light, investigating the relationship between colour, light and natural forms. Within my previous work, light has always played a key factor in the creation of the work and our understanding of colour can only be realised through the presence of light. I have taken the element of light as a material and have playfully refracted light through reflective and translucent materials, directing and manipulating the flow of artificial light. These ephemeral interventions generate vivid images filled with colliding energies and turbulent forms. Each image is created through kinetic sculpture, vibrating and rotating string through white light until the dancing string becomes invisible and the reflected light becomes the only visible object. This transformation leaves behind only a spectrum of colour, organically moving in mid-space.

Artist Statement Rebecca Wild (b.1989) Born in Timperley, UK Rebecca Wild is a curator and graduate from Manchester Metropolitan University studying MA Contemporary curating (2013) and BA (Hons) Interactive arts (2012). She has exhibited previously in various locations around the U.K and has sold work to various art collectors. Rebecca is the director of AIR Gallery (www.airgallery.space) Rebecca’s work is all about experimentation and spontaneity. Wild specializes in a technique called scanography, a photography technique that she approaches from a fine art perspective. She is interested in the unconventional means of taking a picture without the use of a digital camera and have been exploring new ways of creating an image. Her work focuses around three central elements; colour, light and natural forms. The topic of choice is examining the flow and motion of fluids as they combine, collide or conform with other substances both man-made and natural. Her current series is an experiment into seeing what happens to her work when one of these three key elements is removed; in this instance ‘colour’. The focus of the work has dramatically shifted from something of aesthetic beauty to an inquisitive focus of the patterns and forms that are usually unseen with sharp contrasts and an ethereal quality. These organic images represents the beautiful yet fragile nature of fluids, filled with colliding energies and turbulent forms. These patterns are created when hydrophobic and hydrophilic fluids collide within certain lighting conditions. The circular nature of the work is reminiscent of petri dishes and microscopic views, examining a microcosm of reactions on a miniature scale. These images are the only trace of their short lived existence, exemplifying the role of art in creating the illusion of permanence in a transitory world.
