Scarab beetle pushing a mirror ball, photographed on the Akrotiri salt lake in Cyprus. The sphere is 1 meter in diameter, the beetle is made from steel plate. Its is estimated that insects make up fifty percent of the animal biomass on earth, yet we hardly notice them, and the ones we do notice we regard as pests. These tiny invertebrates play such an important role in the functioning of a healthy and balanced Eco system, recycling organic matter, pollinating and spreading diversity on our planet. Currently the global insect populations are in decline, and considering that the planet functions from the bottom up, the loss of these tiny creatures could lead to the collapse of nature. To the ancient Egyptians the dung beetle or scarab was held sacred, linked to Khepri, the god of the rising sun, depicted rolling the sun across the sky, representing creation, transformation and the renewal of life.

As an artist and sculptor I am interested in the form of a structure, the material and its texture. I work mostly in steel, ferrous and non ferrous metals, combining them to produce various sized structures and forms that convey the chosen subject matter in an exaggerated or morphed fashion. The process in which the sculpture is produced is an important factor for me, the various incarnations a piece may go through before I am satisfied, the resistance of the material, problem solving and experimentation. The way to combine various metals, their physical possibilities and the oxidation and aging process are an on going journey in my work. As a lover of nature my personal work is focused mainly on the natural world and humanities relationship within it. My work aims to illuminate our disconnection from the natural world, the commodification of nature and the impact our species is having on this planet.
