Plants are sensitive to sound, can recognize kin and communicate with bees and each other. Plants emit electrical signals to respond to their environments and can hear when they are being chewed on by insects and release chemicals to stop it. Trees communicate with other trees through a subterranean “internet” of fungus. Plants can feel when humans are touching them, and a team of scientists in Singapore discovered that human to plant communication is possible through the diffused electrical signals of plants. The way plants communicate with humans and the environment is something that researchers are still exploring. These ideas have changed the way I look at the plants around me, even the so-called weeds in my yard. I started taking clippings from plants and using them as materials for printmaking. I consider these prints a sort of collaboration with Nature, a meditation on the Wabi-Sabi-ness of the natural world.
