About The Artwork

This is the fifth of the "Arch" series. This was one of the original series for the "Symbiosis" concept line. The series explores structural balance, relationship between parts, harmony of whole, unity and motion. The theme of symbiosis in culture, architecture and society provides inspiration for this series. The pureness of curve and contour is an important part of the concept which provides visual clarity aswell as a tactile experience. The form's interaction with the surrounding space is also an integral part of the work. The wood is Peruvian Walnut. The carving block consists of 4 pieces of wood laminated together. The individual pieces are planed flat using a hand plane before gluing. The wood grain is alligned specifically for the form as you can see in the photgraphs. Part of these wood forms' concept is to show the beauty of the natural wood and to celebrate it. In this case a small knot was discovered in carving the inside of the neck. What a natural condition! It's like a beauty mark. It's very small and adds some more character to the piece. A variety of hand tools were used in the process including chisels, knives, gouges and pull saws. The beeswax treatment enriches the deepness of the colour and provides a lustre to the surface.
