The third in the "Butoh Tripod" series, it is carved from Black Walnut and coated with beeswax and mineral oil for its richness in colour and sheen. Inspired by butoh, the Japanese avante-garde dance, the original in the series (see shop page) was meant to possess a curious melancholy. This 3rd sculpture elaborates on the form with the addition of the concavities. I hope the concavities add another layer of mystery and depth to the concept.

The sculpture is made of two pieces of wood joined together by laminating two flat sides. To flatten the stock I use a block plane and a square to check for true. The grain direction is matched for a fluid figure.

I hope this form will add charm and stillness to a chosen special area. Inspiration for these forms includes such subjects as: the human condition, the mystery of perception and awareness, and human potential. I explore ideas such as: motion in stillness, time and timelessness, and psychological interpretation of abstract form.
