About The Artwork

I've always been fascinated by the Archaic sculpture of the Greek Cycladian Islands. This abstract female torso form is the result of my exploring this style and how to reduce the details of the human figure to it's simplest form that is pleasing to the eye and to the touch. From a formal perspective, the link between Cycladic art and modern sculpture seems obvious: The abstract simplicity, highly stylized forms, and balanced proportions of the many figurines unearthed from the Aegean islands clearly translate to modern values. The hourglass shape of the female torso is evident here, but I’ve softened the hips to broad curving surfaces with only a suggestion of the shoulders. I’ve arched the figure’s back to form negative space between the shoulders and buttocks and created a seductively graceful approach to the female form, the undulating curves of the sculpture hinting at the female shape while never explicitly stating it.. Traditionally, Cycladic sculpture was done in white marble but I decided to explore the possibility of this in black granite from South Africa. I've polished all the surfaces to a high gloss, reflective finish. I’ve mounted the figure on a base of Rosewood.

Is a self taught ceramist and sculptor. He has worked with wood, metal, mixed media, raku, bronze, pit fired clay and now works predominately with stone. Believing that some of the finest carving stone can be found in Canada. Many of the materials he uses such as marble, granite, onyx, jade and alabaster are minerals from British Columbia. The sources of stone he has prospected for himself in a search of materials which allows him the greatest range of artistic expression and freedom. Leslie Dycke's art has been displayed internationally from Vancouver British Columbia, to London England, Tokyo Japan and Managua Nicaragua. His unique works can be found in banks, hospitals and numerous private and corporate collections. The artist was born in Abbotsford in 1955 where he grew up in an entire household of artists. Father, mother, brother and two sister's who themselves are all artists in their own right. He credits this early influence of an artistic environment and family for developing his own interest in sculpture later on in life. After attending the University of British Columbia and working towards his degree in Mathematics. Leslie traveled for several years, backpacking throughout the United States, South America, Asia and the Middle East. Working at various odd jobs along the way to support himself and to allow him to keep traveling. He returned to Canada and now resides in Mission, B.C., with his wife Laura and daughter Sarah. I strive to be the best artist I can be through constant study, research, order, knowledge, and skill and through all that I learn from those around me. It's always my goal that the world enjoy my creations as much as I enjoy creating them. nightowlstudio.ca
