About The Artwork

1 of 5 vessels made for Wholly Expletive, each telling a small part of a wider narrative around pregnancy and the birth of Jesus. Themes include teenage pregnancy; being the mother of a teenage girl; childbirth; and omnipresent notions of virginity and patriarchy. Jill has stripped back the story of the nativity and left only the main characters as she sees it: Mary, Jesus and – like any good parent who wants to support her daughter – Mary’s own mother. The male characters of the narrative have been deemed unimportant by the artist. This vessel shows a 14 year old Virgin Mary looking at a positive winged pregnancy test, representing the Angel Gabriel.

I am Jill Skulina and I’m based in Dundee. I want to see fulfilling creative jobs for artists; for artists to be valued in work for their creative minds; and generally people being encouraged to work to their strengths and passions. My job is to create artwork and to be an antidote to the trials of the modern world. I do this by being a creative dynamo, joy magnet and solution seeker. I am committed to living a full and creative life with compassion, connection and community. I have been self employed for 14 years and over that time I have never had a full time ‘proper’ job, I support myself through freelance endeavours such as facilitating workshops, pimping out my sewing and costume skills, occasionally selling work and being a technician at Dundee Ceramics Workshop. I support other freelancers through my blog, interviewing them, giving them a platform to amplify their achievements and highlight issues we come across when working for ourselves. I am currently looking into setting up a sculpture workshop in Dundee, with the intention of creating jobs, supporting artists at all stages of their creative practice, and functioning, as a business, in a way that encourages care, mindfulness, integrity, authenticity, resourcefulness, cyclical growth, generosity, sustainability and curiosity. I’m at the very early stages of this adventure and happy to talk to anyone interested in knowing more. Qualification wise I have a BDes hons in Interior and Environmental Design and a Masters of Fine Art both from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design; I’m a Professional member of the Society of Scottish Artists and The Spilt Milk Gallery; and have exhibited work across Scotland, including Nomas* Projects, WASPS, SSA, The Meffan Gallery, Tatha Gallery and Generator Projects.
