About The Artwork

Satyrs are classified as demigods, but rather mountain and forest demons. They are the guides of the god of wine Dionysus, they are also in the retinue of the god Pan. They are usually depicted as half-human and half-goat, with curly hair, pointed ears, a blunt nose, horns, a tail, and goat's feet. In later times, this form softens. They are a wild merry lot, they move about in groups, they love wine and all other pleasures, they are licentious, they chase nymphs, they dance and make music, especially to the flute, the syrinx, even the bagpipes. In mythology they are mostly identified with male sexual power, in ancient Greek and Roman art they are often depicted with an erection.
