Jessica Russo Scherr explains how art is a tool to help us understand cultural and ourselves within that culture. By using her artwork series of closed eyes, Jessica addresses how artists create works to process the world around them and how artistic forms of expression create a space for dialogue. By sharing artwork we can stimulate ideas which can create understanding and develop into action. The closed eyes series seeks to understand the balance we must create in our lives between the 24 hour new cycle and self-preservation. See her TEDx Talk for more information. https://youtu.be/ONeNMYDtcTA This is a collage made from many small pieces of paper carefully selected and layered over on another to create the image. There are all types of small hidden images within the artwork. This particular work is of a young woman and former student of mine, Francesca when I taught in Italy. The images in the background are of China, where she is from and collide with into her creating a culture clash.
