“Monster Henry Vlll” is one painting in a series exploring “infamous” historical figures. History books like to portray Henry Vlll as ghastly monster - a malevolent villain - that butchered and tossed aside wives at whim. But was he truly a vindictive and malicious ruler, or one that was tragically romantic and manipulated by those trying to elevate their status in the Royal Court? Could it be that the ruler of England was ruled by his own heart? He created chaos in his own country by turning his back to Rome - all for a woman that seduced him into leaving his wife and Queen. He beheaded Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard on claims of adultery - JRoldan’s portrait asks us if that is really so difficult to identify with? Who among us haven’t, for the briefest moment, fantasized over the vindication of our own broken hearts? JRoldan’s commanding image goes beyond the history books and suggests that Henry Vlll was more terrifying than a monster: He was a human.

JRoldan was born in Colombia, grew up in the US, currnetly living and working in the Uk
ROLDAN HAS A DISTINCTIVE STYLE OF PAINTING THAT COMBINES LOOSE, EXPRESSIVE MARKS WITH PASSAGES OF GRAFFITI-LIKE WRITING.
SCRIBBLES AND SPATTERS FROM BRUSH, FROM FINGERS, AND FROM PENCILS BUILD UP A SENSE OF FEVERISH ENERGY AND PHYSICAL ENGAGEMENT.
ALTHOUGH BORN IN COLOMBIA, J.ROLDAN HAS LIVED IN THE UK SINCE THE 1980s, HIS WORK RELATES BOTH AMERICAN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM AND FORMS OF GESTURAL ABSTRACTION THAT DEVELOPED IN EUROPE AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR. AT THE SAME TIME, HE RECALLS THE EARLIER LANDSCAPE TRADITIONS OF TURNER AND MONET.
THE PAINTINGS BRING TOGETHER J.ROLDAN'S LOVE OF POETRY, A FASCINATION FOR CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY AND AN ABSORPTION IN THE LANDSCAPE AND LIGHT. FRAGMENTS OF POETRY SCRAWLED ONTO THE CANVAS REFER TO THE TRANSIENCE OF HUMAN EXISTENCE, AND EVOKE THE SCATTERED REMNANTS OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS.
