Everybody has a favorite place to go. A restaurant, a bar, a night club. The names of great places enter the language. "21" began as a speakeasy, like some of the other famous New York rendezvous. "21 Varieties"––of liquor, that is. Starting out in Greenwich Village, it's migrated uptown over the years, and changed names in the process, from The Red Head, to Frontón, to The Puncheon Club (No idea what a puncheon is? It's a barrel that holds 50 gallons. Now you know.) When it moved to 21 W. 52nd it became "Jack and Charlie's 21", for Jack Kreindler and Charlie Berns. Then just "21." Once upon a time, during Prohibition, David Niven had a job as one of their liquor salesmen. If you don't live in New York you can visit it by watching the film Sweet Smell of Success. Or you can hang a picture of its iconic exterior behind your bar.
