I made this work for my sister, for our relationship. I make portraits of the people in my life. Mothers, lovers, children, friends and the inevitable self. I like eyes of slight confusion, fear, apprehension. So the work becomes this aggregate of documentation, shared empathy and pause. It celebrates the intimacy that follows a moment of slight foil not with the purpose of dwelling in disaster but to look at the freedom derived from humility. It's about what it feels like on that fine line between depression and elation. The materials used are often quite rudimentary. In this last body of work I used coffee, charcoal, pencil, paper and a box of off-brand crayons my grandmother once purchased from QVC.
