About The Artwork
This painting was inspired by Judy Chicago's "The dinner party". I was born into a very patriarchal culture, in the Soviet Republic. Women's rights was something that was thought about, but little talked about. In this work I use more feminist languages, such as drawing closer to embroidery, almost transparent flowers, and a reference to female genitalia, emphasizing female sexuality - a subject that is still very much denied in many cultures. The whole composition thinks about discrimination in the domestic sphere throughout the history of humanity.

Vera Fonseka is an artist based in Portugal whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally. She describes her works as conveying the paradoxical existence between the scrupulous intricacy of the details and the brutality of iconography. Fonseka's artistic process is marked by her use of mixed techniques with adhesives, fabrics, acrylics, and oils on canvas. She was born in 1982 in Tallinn (ex URSS, actually Estonia) in an actors-family. In 2003 Vera moved to Portugal where she's been living since then. Inspired by Kandinsky, Frank Stella, Beatriz Milhazes and Alexandra Mir, Vera Fonseka tries to make conceptual contribution in Contemporary Art.
