About The Artwork

Is That A...Belly Button? November, 2020 7.5" x 9.75" Ink Pen on Acid Free, Heavyweight, Medium Surface, Cream Paper 80lb (130gsm) Treated with a matte, UV archival varnish My intention with this piece was to follow the shadow and light which contours the sinuous flow of the female form, using entirely leaf shapes. The piece is stippled ink on paper, using the same Micron .03 pen until the ink ran out. I wanted to remove the speed and ease of the line from my process and challenge my focus into a deeper study. I drew this piece as Seattle's winter approached and leaves encroached on the city in a fantastical display. The world is continuously in flux, but the transition between seasons can intensify ones awareness of change and overwhelm. The process of creating this piece allowed me to slow my world down, dot by dot, and achieve a meditative presence; to sink into winter and accept the leaves as they came and went. The title is based on a dear friend's reaction to the finished piece after he had witnessed the creation of it over several weeks.

Artist Statement: As this ink carves into paper, As water into canyon, As roots into soil, As wrinkles into skin, As experience into DNA, Connection is both absolute and essential. Creation of art focuses my attention to the destruction human beings are inflicting on the natural world. I carve the expression and emotion inspired by the bits and pieces of the world I connect with onto paper. My choice of abstraction blurs the line between humans and nature. My intention is to facilitate a reconnection between all forms of life.
