About The Artwork

This is one of the first pieces where I begin to introduce the colour red, after I was advised to do so during an Astrology reading on an Artist's residency in Morocco. The use of red compelled me to bring in this costume element. The figure on the left is a clown. The clown idea is a way of me expressing layers- appearing to feel one way, but experiencing another.

Abi Joy Samuel (b.1993) is a non-binary British Jewish artist based in London. Their work mainly uses the figure as a means of exploring the complexity of human nature with oils, charcoal and pastel. Abi goes on a spiritual process of letting go, and recreating, a metaphor for the temporary nature of our existence, and the beauty of being able to start over through multiple layers. Their aesthetic captures both the dark and the sublime, strongly influenced by her experience working as the creative assistant for McQ Alexander McQueen. After completing their studies at Central Saint Martins and a degree in fashion design, they had their first solo show where their work was picked up by an art critic from The New York Times. In 2019, they were awarded the Lexus Prize at the Hampstead Art Fair. Abi is now represented by two galleries 'Sala de Arte' in Aruba and 'Cicek Gallery' based in London.
