This piece was done in 2002 while studying art at Western Kentucky University during my sophomore year of college. This work was based off of a tiny photograph I found in a book. The photograph was originally taken by Robert Doisneau in 1952, titled Hell. The assignment was to find a photo and to use the grid method to draw the image on a larger scale. This inspired me because of the man walking beneath the open mouth gargoyle. It was his strength and stoic face that made me feel safe and reminded me of the life of a protector. I feel that the photograph represents the public service entities such as police, corrections, firefighters, and military because even now as they patrol the streets to protect and serve, all around them is evil and danger but within them is bravery and strength.
