About The Artwork

Le Chagrin (The Sorrow), ink on paper. Illustration done in nib, with India ink, on paper. A surrealist illustration, with symbolic elements, to represent the consequential introspection to the feeling of pain (pain in a sentimental, not physical sense) and the importance of facing it in order to grow and mature through lived experiences. Vital brambles, loaded with sweet and ripe fruit cross the mind of the person depicted. The person, stripped and hollowed out inside, reveals to himself the hidden and intimate content (through the rib cage he releases and reveals, dissipating it to the external light, the heavy and dark content of the painful feeling). An eye observes with awareness while enclosed in a triangle, the number 3 of which represents a perfect and indivisible number - like the physical body, the rational mind, and the instinctive feeling - (the number 3 is also written on the girl's fingers). The triangle that encloses the eye is the wing of a butterfly (representation of the soul). One finger of the girl points to a symbol on her chest: a square that encloses 8 rays (balance and justice and solar symbol). ____________________________________________________________________________________________ All images and text relating to this work on Saatchi Art are copyright © Elisabeth Turci. Born in Belgium and currently based out in Italy. I create paintings and illustrations with a dreamlike and surreal style inspired by symbolism, alchemy, folklore and mythology as well as fantastic and sci-fi literature. In my paintings there is a constant search for historical symbolism. I use the same conceptual approach with which I started as a published author before dedicating myself to painting. My intent is to explore the emotions, even the most difficult or dark, with a hint of kindness. Art is my way of elaborating them in order to grow, to face reality without forgetting to dream. My paintings has been featured in books, magazines and exhibited in art galleries in Europe and USA.
