About The Artwork

Emotions are like water: when not given the proper outlet, they gather, build pressure, and will find release without respect for its container. The repression of anger, in particular, is to watch it stem and grow from the inside out. Oftentimes, anger can be seen brewing from an outside perspective as each trigger builds upon the last until rage erupts, eventually consuming and overtaking one's mental and physical being. This concept is reflected through the pained hands ravaged by a tangle of thorns. The red thorns signify the multitude of triggers leading up to the moment of outburst while the subcutaneous roots represent the deep-seated source of rage.

Anna Mikhaela Reyes is a contemporary artist based in Denton, Texas. After receiving her BFA in Drawing and Painting from Kennesaw State University, Anna focused her practice on the use of charcoal, watercolor, and colored pencil to elevate the romanticism of botany and the human figure. Anna's work explores themes in psychology, the flux of personal vulnerabilities, and the elusiveness of interpersonal connection. Common to her work is obscure symbolism as well as the intertwining elements of romance and melancholy—an acceptance that the most beautiful things in life are often bittersweet.
