Drawn directly from life on a sunny afternoon in 2016 in Brighton, UK. A sensitive description of the model's presence in that moment in time. Using simple line and minimal tone to convey the essence of that person in light and space. Charcoal allows an instant response being quick and forgiving. The most primitive of instruments, a simple burnt stick and a chalky rock can be used to describe the complexity of the world and capture a lasting essence of life. As a tool, charcoal can follow mood and react with softness or strength, nature's perfect instrument. Gently tracing the form of a person, drawing them out and onto paper.

Art – Architecture – Design “All artists are willing to suffer for their work. But why are so few prepared to learn to draw?” – Banksy I have drawn since childhood, and throughout my studies and practice in Architecture & Design. Entirely self-taught, it was through drawing I learned to actively see the World. The detail and the whole, and the interconnections between everything in Life itself. In the past I have exhibited drawings and paintings in numerous venues in the UK and sold to various private collectors globally. In recent years drawing has been a constant companion to my architectural projects and a meditative space that rebalances the whole of my work: a meditation in light, line and tone. Drawing figures directly from life represents a visual interview with another. Describing and communicating the sensual experience of that particular human being in time and three-dimensional space but in two dimensions. In the words of Michel Angelo: “The science of design, or of line-drawing, if you like to use this term, is the source and very essence of painting, sculpture, architecture... Sometimes... it seems to me that... all the works of the human brain and hand are either design itself or a branch of that art… Let whoever may have attained to so much as to have the power of drawing know that he holds a great treasure.”
