Centralia was a coal mine town. In the early 60s, the mine caught fire and started burning uncontrollably and it was unable to be put out. To this day it is still currently burning. Nowadays, the town is officially abandoned, even though a small number of people insist on living there. With the mine burning and emitting fumes, it is unsafe to live there and the surface above is prone to collapse, which caused the highway to become a mess, cracking with rubble. In the autumn you can even see it radiate steam. This town and highway has inspired lots of creative art, including movies and video games and all sorts of "lore", due to the eeriness of it. I hope you enjoy my representation of what I find an irresistible subject.
