About The Artwork

There’s a dramatic and ominous feeling when, against all odds, there is a victorious winner that is capable of emerging in a grueling battlefield with the opposing leader defeated at their feet and surrounded by both allies and enemies alike. I wanted to highlight the glorified queen and the fallen king as the centerpieces, so there’s a focused view around them with very clear lines and sharp contours as opposed to the blurred pieces in the rest of the board. The light source and the shadows also end up putting more emphasis on the center so that there’s no mistaking that the King is helpless and the Queen shines… in other words, checkmate. Charcoal pencils on 100 lb paper, unframed.

Pedro Silva Santos, aspiring artist from Portugal, Lisbon 1979. I've always liked drawing since I was young and at the time I was using just pencil graphite for some simple sketches. I stopped drawing in the university to focus on my studies and been working on another field since then. All these years I've always wanted to go back to drawing so I've started again in early 2018. Now, I've been learning how to use charcoal which I really like. I love working on detailed, realistic pieces favoring human poses and forms as well as close-up objects, especially with striking lighting effects and shadows. I love a blank sheet, the feeling of a pencil on paper, the sound of the first stroke, the final result and everything in between.
