Dial A Song takes the shape of an old radiogram composed of a rotary dial phone and a record player. The caller has to choose a song, place the vinyl on the record player and dial the number of the person they want to send the song to. The song starts to play automatically when the callee answers the phone; all that can be heard is the music, not the caller. The caller, on the other hand, can only listen to the reactions of the callee but can’t talk to him. Dial A Song offers an alternative form of communication through music only. Sometimes two people have a lot to say to each other but words might not be enough to express them. Music adds another dimension that is hard to explain but very easy to relate to on an emotional level. It also highlights the importance of physicality and analogical technologies in world that is more and leaning to the virtual. By making things easier and quicker, Internet has enabled us to do a lot more but has also decreased their importance. By using a record player, people have to find the right song they want to share. Digging a vinyl is far more difficult than just downloading a song. The caller also has to dial a number by remember the digits rather than relying on the mobile phone’s memory. These efforts – similar to a ritual - are part of the message and give it a strength that words on their own would not have. The sounds and their imperfections also create a very unique and almost nostalgic result. Unlike a digital song, a vinyl has scratches and therefore becomes your own, unique, copy of song, not anybody else’s.
