About The Artwork

“In Loving Memory” is a composition of layers of images and information published during the 2014 Ebola pandemic. These images and information gave the general public an insight to what happened at the Ebola infected areas. The images included how the health workers were adorned with protective gears which were beautifully displayed on sticks after use. They also include the mass grave yards for those who died and how the grave yards were filled with white wooden crosses. The installation takes the form of the physical structure of the Ebola Virus which could be best viewed from the top through the opening right above the installation as if one is viewing through a microscope. It is believed that the discovery of the structure of the Ebola virus gives an insight of how the virus works which in turn may accelerate discovery of effective treatments and vaccines. The form was represented with 132 of approximately one (1) foot high white painted wooden crosses with gloves hanged on each wooden cross representing work done as they joined to form the shape of the Ebola Virus. They also include freehand-drawn obituaries and printed information of selected facts on Ebola stuck to the floor close to the feet of the crosses. The obituaries are some of the medical personnel who got infected and or died from the Ebola virus. The height of the wooden cross, the obituaries and Ebola information stuck on the floor will direct the audience to go round the installation as one would in filing past a body laid in state to pay their last respect. At the end of the “filing past”, one would be expected to leave with some information about the Ebola virus and the contribution of the medical volunteers.

Albert Nii Nortey Dowuona – alniinod (b. 1987) is an artist who lives and works in Accra, Ghana. He earned his BFA in Painting and Sculpture from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi in 2010. Nii Nortey explores materials that have with them “voices” or “narratives” where he employs them into his socio-political narrative. These materials come as everyday and already-made items. Some of the items he has explored on within his art practice include the potter’s wheel, fabric, newspapers, audio-visuals, and popular musical tunes in his works. Nii Nortey is currently exploring the idea of Social Identity and Authenticity where the “African-print fabric” becomes an allegory to comment on the complex nature of identity. The fabric’s history; its origin, production, designs, consumers, usage, representation and its brands create a narrative of mixed identity and authenticity.
