a paradoxical combination of deeply individual expression and a chaotic set of quotations and references to the works of other painters. Both the choice of motifs (from landscapes to sexual acts, from grotesque face masks to "diary" scenes of everyday life), and references to the art of the past (from Bacon, Hockney and Marlene Dumas to Soutine and Matisse) - everything drowns in relationships that cannot be verbalised with pictorial material, in impulsive sketching, smearing, scraping, tracing. In fact, one should not speak about the pictorial language of Stephen Nolan (an excess of "individual languages" on the general stage of contemporary art leads to a complete devaluation of their communicative possibilities), but about his intonation. Not about some new artistic knowledge that he seeks to bring into common use, but about that unique manner that appropriates and transforms any knowledge. Not an artist of the message, but an artist of intonation - this is the main thing that I saw there (to the extent of my own depravity) But intonation in today's art world is more likely to be individual than a message.
