About The Artwork

Inspired by the Prof. Bethany Hughes' documentary, "When the Moors Ruled in Europe"; as well as this quote: "All the Moorish soldiers were dressed with silk and black wool that had been forcibly acquired...Their Black faces were like pitch and the most handsome of them was like (Black as) cooking pan." – King Alfonso X of Castile, 13th century I hope to depict a period in history (700-year Moorish rule in Spain, Malta, Sicily, and Southern France) when quite different images of Africans dominated the European imagination.
