About The Artwork

I was inspired by the Pyrenean Ibex as one of my series of extinct species. The Pyrenean ibex was one of four subspecies of the Iberian ibex. The first to become extinct was the Portuguese ibex (Capra pyrenaica lusitanica) in 1892. Following several failed attempts to revive the subspecies through cloning, a living specimen was born in July 2003; however, she died several minutes after birth due to a lung defect. The Pyrenean ibex remains the only animal to have ever been brought back from extinction—and also the only one to go extinct twice. I chose to draw an image of the Pyrenean Ibex in its dead or skeletal state and create a stencil with my drawing. I composed the imagery with selected paper, and an abstracted acrylic background geometric shapes made of decorative papers. The style I work in is a blending of abstraction and realism which I call Emergence, the process of coming into view or becoming exposed after being concealed.
