About The Artwork

A would-be dragon slayer, a fearless knight in shining armor courageously faces a Wyvern, a fierce two legged dragon with a poisonous sting at the end of its tail. Standing amongst the ferns that cover the forest floor, the noble warrior faces off with the reptilian monster that inhabits the dark wood. He holds in his hands a massive sword and advances to clearing ahead where the great beast roars its challenge and raises its deadly tail. Fantasy art has always been one of my favorite genres of art. However, I've often found that artists (including myself) tend to go a bit overboard when it comes to armor. Often it's depicted as so cumbersome that it would break the wearer's spine or collar bone. Also, it tends to often be shown with an enormous amount of elaborate decoration. Though it's true that some suits of armor from the middle ages found in museums are very decorative, these were show pieces, not battlefield armor. For my work here, I wanted to go a bit more realistic with the armor for the knight. It's just plain steel with an undercoat of mail. I rather like the way it turned out. I think it rather helps the knight stand out against the forest. I made this using digital CGI and painting techniques. The wyvern and knight were posed in Poser then exported to Vue for rendering. The forest scene was made in Vue as well. I used GIMP to do the post production work.

I want my art to be the doorway to ones imagination, a spark that leads to daydreams of journeys into history, fantasy worlds, and even the occassional dark lands of horror. Hence, I refer to my art as work as "Adventurous Art". Growing up in the foothills of the Appalachians, I've spent a great deal of time outdoors hiking, fishing and camping in the forests of north Georgia. Consequently, nature and organic forms play a big role in my images. I like to portray animals and creatures, but I’ll depict the occasional person as well; and almost always set in a natural environment. My art has been featured in the pages of Wild West, natural history, and horror magazines. I've had illustrations appear on everything from the covers of fantasy novels to the science sections of newspapers. A few of my works have even found their way into museums of science and history. So, welcome...and sit back and enjoy the adventure.
