Title: 3 Graces For this work I was inspired by the Greek mythology, the Moirai, often known in English as the Fates (Latin: Fatae), were the white-robed incarnations of destiny; their Roman equivalent was the Parcae (euphemistically the "sparing ones"). Their number became fixed at three: Clotho (spinner), Lachesis (allotter) and Atropos (unturnable). This work is made by the ancient process of preparing the board with bolo, gold leaf and puncturing. The part of painting on gold leaf is an specific process of applying oil color on metallic surface and use of garlic as glue and other “secrets” of Siena’s school. I love to take all of these ancient techniques and turn it into a contemporary way. Series: Unknown Monk The project of “Unknown monk” as allegorical character who represent Italian knowledge in art technique updated in contemporary way. The idea of the project is a kind of promotion of Italian know-how that I’m carrying around the world for a long time. The first stop was a solo show with masterclass that I had at the Triumph Gallery in Moscow. The second stop was the workshop at Fontbonne University. The third stage will be a workshop with a solo exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles next October. For more info http://www.alexfolla.com/unknownmonk.html

Italy
I was born in Oggiono (Italy) on 8th of June 1980, I'm working and living between Filorera (Alps), Milan and Moscow. In my painting there is the fundamental difference between photographic realism and pictorial realism. The first reproduces what the camera has taken, the second (my) reproduces what is necessary. The rest is suggested for our eye by visual trick and realized with our conscience. My painting is domestic and homey one, you can say whatever you want, but not academic, because it does not fit any of the academics criteria. It is not accepted within the contemporary academic institution. (In the West the official academic style in art is informal language). My art has no cultural references, it is not looking for historical consistency, but most of all does not have moralistic pretensions. My painting is the apology of sublime banality of everyday life.
