About The Artwork

I made this painting with watercolor and acrylic paint. I use brushes to apply the acrylic and watercolor, I also use watercolor pencils to draw on the surface, too. You can see the white lines drawn in at the top of the painting, on the shadow where the wall meets the ceiling, or in the carpet. I have documented the evolution of this painting, featured on my Instagram feed (@erika_stearly) This painting is part of an ongoing series, where I make paintings of the spaces where people live. Titled by street address, this series depicts actual residences I have found listed for short term rentals on the internet. This particular painting is one of four made of this address. Two of those painting - not including this one - were featured in a solo exhibition at the Boxheart Gallery in Pittsburgh in early 2019.

I am an American artist, primarily making still life paintings of the spaces where people live. Domestic settings are full of household objects that provide dynamic compositions that are challenging to me as a painter. I am able to alter and exaggerate the color and scale of items without disrupting a viewer's ability to create a narrative for what is happening in a scene. I believe that art should be accessible to a general audience, and work to engage people who are unsure of how to engage with art. In addition to my personal studio practice, I am the creator and director of an interactive painting installation, which invites participants to create their own paintings and select small paintings to keep. My work facilitating community driven art projects, which was the focus of my MFA, has been supported by Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the Black Rock Arts Foundation and the Puffin Foundation. I am a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, and my work has been exhibited across the United States.
