About The Artwork

The inspiration for this painting came from the narrow streets of a small town in Southern Italy. The colour of the stone used in the buildings of the old town of Polignano lend themselves to painterly exploration and I wanted to create a sense of suspense within the painting by empathising the warmth night of a Mediterranean night. The painting itself was create from a combination of photographs I took of the town when I visited some years ago. It is just one of a series I did from that visit and it was painted in 2016 and is Oil on canvas stretched on a wooden stretcher and is ready to be hung. The title of the work A Bitter Earth is a reference to the colour of the stone used in the buildings and a reference to the burning heat of summer in that part of Italy.
