"A Handful of Moments", 2015 - acrylic on fiberboard, 40 x 40 cm. A ghostly chain passes through a man's hands, flowing like water between his fingers. The mysterious object seems to respond to the touch, yet is still somehow unreal, remote -- untouchable. The lighting is cool and dim, also remote. The panel is sealed with layers of white acrylic enamel, then coated with black acrylic and roughly sanded. Over this distressed surface the image of the figure is painted in monochrome with white and Payne's gray, warmed only slightly by tiny additions of ochre at highlights. The ribbon is painted with a fine lettering brush, using acrylic paint thinned with water. The completed image, once dry, was sealed with a light coating of UV protectant varnish. Note: These pieces owe a nod of thanks to Italian photographer Tina Modotti (1896-1942) who also explored the expressive potential of the image of the human hand.

United States
Born in Montgomery, Alabama, and raised in the rural Appalachian foothills of the northeastern part of the state, my childhood was surrounded by the natural world, the rigid social and cultural traditions of the deep South, the distant rumblings of 1960's social changes, and the panoramas of human existence revealed to me through reading, music and art. Most of my adult life has been spent working as a graphic designer in Birmingham, South Florida, and Dallas -- primarily in the television industry -- where I was immersed yet another hybrid universe, a fun-house world of ego, transitory celebrity, and social manipulation. These days I live and work in a cabin on the edge of the Ozark National Forest in northwest Arkansas, decompressing.
