About The Artwork

Charlie Brown is a lovable character and speaks from his heart. He is a hero and an icon and timeless. As his profile is instantly recognisable I am able to let my full inspiration and experimentation modernise, reimagine and apply my personal filter to his form. I have used some comic strip elements to use as a pattern in an abstract form. I love the freedom and feeling of abstract art and the unique emotions of Charlie Brown fused to create a new feeling and emotion, and offer a piece of art free and open to interpretation. My work is inspired by abstract op art and comic strip art and a cultural icon which endeavours to create a refreshing piece with a neo pop influence.

Richard Levine My interest and motivation comes from finding new ways of looking at the seemingly familiar. Geometric shapes and patterns are used to bridge more organic shapes, playing with iconic images of people or characters which are imbued with historical symbolisms and meaning. My relationship as an artist with the viewer is therefore often mediated by the prior existence of these images in previous contexts. The patterns themselves are influenced by the Bauhaus, Jan Tschichold, Piet Swart, the Memphis Group, Victor Vasarely, Josef Albers, Richard Anuszkiewicz and OpArt of the 1960s and 70s, but with a definite fresh 21st century spin. The topography of the subject is mapped and played over with pattern and design to offer a new set of responses. I hope to give new life, energy and movement to all my pieces.
