About The Artwork

The Bamboo or the Cheraw dance, as it is called locally, is characterized by the use of bamboo staves, which are kept in cross and horizontal forms on the ground. While the male dancers move these bamboo staves in rhythmic beats, the female dancers perform by stepping in and out of the bamboo blocks. Recognized as one of the oldest dances of the North Eastern Indian state of Mizoram, the Cheraw dance has become an integral part of almost every festival of Mizoram. I had been fascinated by this rhythmic dance steps ever since my childhood and wanted to capture it by painting this art form.

The pseudonym of Radhika Rammoorthy is ArtzyRads I am a self taught artist. Right from childhood, drawing & painting formed an extension of my expression and dabbling in colors epitomized freedom and excitement. Born in Bangalore, raised in different cities in India and in the African subcontinent, cultural observations of varied lifestyles added myriad perspectives to my art. Made Chennai, the temple city of India, my home, the traditional dance forms inspired my paintings. My paintings bring rich color and is not restricted to any particular subject. I love to explore the unknown and move away from the mundane, thus bringing diverse forms of subjects, materials, mediums and paintings techniques. While I have made a career in the disability sector in India for over two decades, painting kindles the creative passion in me and it makes me feel the world is indeed a beautiful place to live!
