About The Artwork

Bharatayuddha is a term used in Indonesia to refer to the story of the great war between the Pandawa family and the Kauravas, the main character of the Mahabharata heroic story. The word Bharatayuddha is a Sanskrit word which means "War of the descendants of Bharata". This war is the climax of the Mahabharata, a famous Indian epic which has been adapted in Java as a work of art in the forms of kakawin (ancient Javanese poetry) and wayang. The term Bharatayuddha is taken from the title of an Old Javanese kakawin manuscript written in 1157 by Empu Sedah on the orders of Maharaja Jayabhaya, King of the Kingdom of Kadiri. In fact, the Bharatayuddha book, which was written during the Kediri period, was meant to symbolize the civil war between the kingdoms of Kediri and Jenggala, who were both descendants of King Erlangga. The situation of the civil war is described as if it were written in Byasa's Mahabharata, namely the war between the Pandavas and Korawas who are actually also descendants of Byasa, the author. The story of Kakawin Bharatayuddha was later adapted into New Javanese under the title Serat Bratayuda by poet Yasadipura I during the Kasunanan Surakarta era. In Yogyakarta, the Bharatayuddha story was rewritten under the title Serat Purwakandha during the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana V. The writing began on 29 October 1847 to 30 July 1848.
