The canvas/stretcher is made from vintage materials - pitch pine and linen. It was given to me by some one who had seen and liked my work. It had an inherent atmosphere and quality of the 1940's - 50's which has blended with the concept. The action takes place in a partly derelict/destroyed house. It's almost as if, on one level, a child's toys had come to life inside the house but that there is also a sense of events outside the house coming crashing inward too. A ditched fighter plane lies in the interior, a pilot is sprawled in a wall cavity, half in, half out of the building, while another crawls across the floor, with a peculiarly orange attire with echos of Guantanamo Bay. On one hand there is something comedic about the scene and the surreal cartoon like violence being enacted - it's slapstick satire but with a serious message too. From the left, a somewhat uncanny light illuminates the scene ; a huge presence, is making itself felt in the room. 'The Blast From The Past' is not only repeating itself - it also appears it has become very much bigger than it was before.

United Kingdom
Originally born in the Highlands of Scotland, I spent my childhood between there and Perthshire. The influence of the the North West runs particularly strongly in my paintings and also serves as a backdrop for many site specific 3 D work too. Originally my training was in sculpture and I spent the earlier part of my career Working on a commission and Residency Basis In The Public Art Field. Wood was my preferred medium for a number of years, particularly carving on a large scale before I diversified into painting, photography, installation and laterally bronze casting. There is a natural interplay of all these disciplines with each one informing the other. From 1999 to 2016, I worked as a Part - time Tutor at Edinburgh College of Art, leaving that position to concentrate more exclusively on my own free lance pursuits, combined with more extensive travel.
