About The Artwork
Watercolour on rag paper. Brompton Oratory. Shows the north east elevation and dome of this landmark baroque church in South Kensington, London. This started out as a sketch, made from the steps of another church just behind it, after rain with sun breaking through storm clouds. I wanted to capture how imposing, grand and audacious in scale this building appears. Some London buildings - I find - almost seem to belong to another place and here I was reminded of the baroque architecture of churches and monasteries I'd come across in central Europe. So I added something of another landscape to the picture .. and relocated the church to somewhere in a vast fir forest, which I thought the perfect setting, with trees and church all orientated heavenward.

After Art studies at Chelsea School of Art Peter went on to become a Landscape Architect and Urban Designer. He's intrigued by the essence of place, a spirit or feel and the different qualities place can evokes, ... calm, memory, nostalgia, revelation, portent. He continues to travel widely and seeks to reclaim watercolour painting as a cutting edge, cool and edgy. He lives in London.
