Full-length portrait of Charles Martel. Born around 688 in Andenne near Namur in Belgium and died on October 22, 741 in Quierzy, he is a statesman and Frankish military leader who, as duke of the Franks and mayor of the palace, ruled Francia from 718 to his death. His main military achievement was to have defeated the army of Umayyad Muslims near Poitiers in 732, thus protecting Europe (outside the Iberian Peninsula) from a first Muslim invasion. His son Pépin the Short founded the dynasty of the Carolingian kings in 754.
