About The Artwork

A woman is crucified, eiper gynaikon esti – because she is a woman. The Orpheos Bakkikos is the first illustration of a crucifixion, that of a woman in Ancient Greece. The woman of Eiper Gynaikon Esti is crucified on a matrix of tubes and on a large phallus, showing the eternal exploitation of women by men. She is crucified using the traditional way described by Herodotus ‘They crucified him with hands and feet stretched out and nailed to cross-pieces, and they placed an upright pole in the vicinity of his groin’. While a crucifixion was an execution, it was also a humiliation, and the woman has been humiliated. She has been raped multiple times, and she has been groped by the hands of her executioners soiled by her blood. Her nipples have been pierced in a sadistic way, and she has been decorated by a crown of thorn, which is the chain ring of a bicycle. Because the woman transcends time. We do not know why she was crucified: we only know that it was because she is a woman. While she is being crucified, the sadism of the situation brings sexual gratification to the phallus that ejaculates like a volcano and releases a pyroclastic flow. This signifies the destructive nature of man who not only brings suffering but also wracks havoc in the world with his uncontrolled outbursts of violence.
