Currently we celebrate the rise of Agri-business and the gains made in production and in the increase of acres of farmable land. How were these gains made possible? They were made possible by the use of antibiotics, steroids, herbicides, fungicides, In the race to “get big or get out”, chemicals were employed that allowed for large scale production and necessitated farm programs that created an environment favorable to big farmers and the elimination of small family farms. We now have a system of food production dependent on the chemical industry and industrial processes giving us a population hooked on high fructose corn syrup and experiencing cancer, obesity, heart disease and diabetes at ever increasing rates over the last 40 years. This painting is from a body of work that is not only visually appealing but also draws the viewer into a larger dialogue. The title is a reference to a Harvey Dunn painting.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
