About The Artwork

I created this piece while early in my practice of both mediation and Buddhism as a whole. The monk at my local temple was talking about the nature of duality and impermanence at a dharma-talk one afternoon. The juxtaposition between competing ideas can create beauty from a Zen perspective was the basic take away for me. This being early in my meditation career I soon realized (after much cushion time with my brain screaming at me and not quieting) how work time and dedication it would really take to not totally suck ass at it. I started to look at what in my everyday life had similarities with the meditation process when it struck me “I Ink a lot of my art work” (Inking as in the comic book and illustration since is takin your rough or defined pencil drawing turning the grey lines black). For anyone that has inked their own comics you know that basically redrawing your same pencil image requires patience and a zoned in zoned out type of mentality. Thus drawing or “inking” as mediation became one of my go to ways to bring Buddhism and meditation into my everyday life. This particular piece is based around the idea of the conflict and duality between clean and strong forceful controlled line work that is used in graphic illustration and the free flowing in the moment use of accidental spattering of water color and acrylic paint. This duality and conflict between the two creates an interesting opposition to what is expected. The left hand side of the paper was ripped an torn as a way to show the fragility of the moment and the fleeting nature of world we live in, in contrast to the archival Bristol Board paper, inks, and water color it was created with. Also as a way to break the stagnated rectangle that most artwork is created in because what is Buddhism but trying to break free of the bonds that we oppose on ourselves in this world. -Jon “Sketch” Achelpohl
