About The Artwork

PAINTING FEATURES Original mixed media painting without frame. My paintings are original, vividly signed and dated on the front by myself.......Nweke Uche MEDIUM: Mixed media MATERIALS: Enamel, acrylic, oil colour, sawdust, glue on canvas SIZE: 46" height x 36" width PRODUCTION DATE: 2015 DESCRIPTION This is another heavy structured painting composition in the sense that colours are tactfully rendered on intercepting geometric planes or shapes which seem to meet and merge imperceptibility. Taking the eyes to the center of the painting lays a teenage beggar re-echoing an unfavorable situation of the poor masses. The roughly textured surface appearance and the intercepting planes is a visual metaphor for hunger and starvation in the country, the land believed to be a fertile land is currently faced with staple food price skyrockets as fuel scarcity lingers. Traders have attributed the increment to the continuous and acute scarcity of refine petroleum products, particularly petrol and that’s why it has a negative effect on their business. The cost of transporting these items from the farm or their places of purchase to the market has become more expensive than buying the items since the fuel scarcity challenge started. This ugly situation affects mostly the poor masses as it is represented with a teenage figure holding an empty plate with left hand while the right hand is placed inside it. Again, the mood of the figure depicts a helpless situation. Despite his current condition, he is not deterred; there is still an element of hope as his left eye which has a steady gaze at on direction. This seems to project what the future holds for him. Away from the figure down to the foreground, a calabash is seen facing upside down very close to the figure. The position of the calabash has a strong hold on hunger and deprivation in the country. RELEVANCE OF MY STYLE The process is actually initiated by the desire to create a painting that demands attention and has a dynamic appearance. With this approach, I maintain textural effects and geometric shapes as a focal point with recycled waste sawdust and glue as a binder. However, the relevance of the style is to manage sawdust from saw millers and add value to it so as to enable it contribute to environment sustainability, in view of the advocacy against global climate change, due to the way it is being burned to ashes in most timber saw mills. One may ask-How do we replace the burning of waste sawdust with recycling to painting and equally save the environment? This very question therefore, gave root to this style of my painting. Notwithstanding, this approach to painting is my own unique way of contributing to the environmental sustainability through reduction of pollution and health problems arising from sawdust combustion, through creative means of recycling the waste sawdust into painting. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while enhancing the quality of life and public health of the people.

Nweke Uchechukwu was born many years ago in Awka Anambra state Nigeria. After graduating from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, He began to work full time as a studio artist. At first, he started exploring various styles in painting. But over time, he developed a keen interest in environmental sustainability with recycled sawdust and white glue as chief medium of exploration of artistic sensibility and here my creative ingenuity can be better expressed.
