About The Artwork

Subject: Fontana dell'Elefante and Palazzo degli Elefanti, Catania, Italy Description: This painting depicts the Fontana dell'Elefante and Palazzo degli Elefanti in Catania, Sicily. Since the fountain was erected in 1736 the Elephant, named u Liotru, has been the symbol of the city. However, the elephant, made of local black lava stone, is much older than the fountain. Dating back to Roman times, it originally graced the walls of the Black Colosseum built sometime in the 2nd century AD. This elephant has been repurposed and moved countless times, outliving its original home and the subsequent destruction of the city in the 1693 earthquake. Once a symbol of the reach and power of the Roman empire, this piece of building ornament has taken on new meanings and significance in modern Catania. I was struck by the power of ornament to tell stories and embody identity as physical objects that become imbued with meaning over time. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
