About The Artwork

"I‘ve started painting a new series inspired by the stunning frescoes unearthed at the site of the volcanic explosion in 79 AD at Pompeii, Italy. What I was struck by when I looked at the murals was the joie de vivre of the people as vividly depicted in the murals that decorated their homes. All of that joy in stark contrast to the tragedy of wholesale death that wiped out approximately two thousand people in a matter of seconds. Above all, I was inspired to use color to capture the joy shown in the everyday lives of these ancient people as depicted in their murals. Below are the resulting four paintings in the Series. I've used the repetitive element of the Pompeiian bird, reproduced from one of the original murals, which I then printed, collaged onto the surface of each of the four paintings and over-painted. The repetitive element of the bird represents hope for a future life."

For me, painting is always about color, visual communication and searching for the unique or unexpected. My style emphasizes color and shape relationships, textural surfaces and enjoying the accidental and the spontaneous. I work with conventional media using acrylic on canvas and watercolor on paper. I also create artworks digitally using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter. Always, I feel the overriding desire to speak sweetly, yet boldly, in the realm of visual communication using color and shape, imagination and surprise, spontaneity and the accidental to create a "magical reality" for the viewer.
