About The Artwork

I created this work while I was reading a book about the Dutch Golden Age painters. A lot of painters of that period created 'vanitas' style still life paintings, which featured things like food, drink and musical instruments to illustrate the pleasures of life, but also so-called 'vanitas' symbols to remind viewers of how brief life was. (For example, the fruit they depicted may be beginning to rot or flowers in a vase may be wilting.) In my painting the stones represent longevity, and the autumn leaves and the bone in the bottom right are vanitas symbols. It may seem a bit depressing to think about how quickly everything in the natural world changes, dies and decays, but in many ways that is what makes it so precious and so attractive. The same goes for our own lives. Would life be as exciting, and would you work so hard to achieve your goals if you knew you were going to be around for ten thousand years?

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
