This piece was created during my time in Liverpool. I remember I had come across the artist Andres Serrano and therefore I began to do a lot of thinking and research surrounding the topic of Identity. After a lot of research and writing in my journal about my own ideas surrounding the validity of identity based on appearance, I decided to stop thinking and start painting. It was around 3am and I had placed a blank A1 sheet of paper onto the wall. I began by sticking random sized pieces of masking tape onto the sheet. Next I mixed up a paint palette consisting of reds, blues, purples and white (which is often my main colours of choice). I started to quickly apply the paint with a palette knife, however the process was becoming more and more spontaneous and subconscious that I was suddenly using my hands and fingerprints to paint.

Ireland
Lisa Kelly is a young emerging Irish artist. Graduated with a BA Honours Degree in Fine Art at Liverpool Hope University. Currently living and working in Derry, N.I. A dialogue between painting and photography and the theme of portraiture informs the work. The use of paint is expressive and whilst the image has its origins within the photograph, an attempt is made to move beyond the strictly illustrative through the use of colour and expressionistic mark-making. The portrait paintings offer a counterweight to the ‘selfie culture’, depicting the depth of personality and contradicting the shelter provided by the filtered ‘selfie’. In doing so, the artist embraces failure, anger, loneliness and feelings of insecurity, portraying them as the norm, and even as positive in some cases if channeled appropriately.
